Reference Your Essay. Referencing is a system that allows you to acknowledge the contributions and work of others in your writing by citing your sources. A feature of academic writing is that it contains references to the words, information and ideas of others. All academic essays MUST contain references. Referencing guards against plagiarism, a serious academic offence. Plagiarism is copying.
References should always be accurate, allowing your readers to trace the sources of information you have used. The best way to make sure you reference accurately is to keep a record of all the sources you used when reading and researching for an assignment. Citations also make your writing more persuasive. When writing the citation, you do not need to cite the secondary source unless you are using some information from it. If you have just come across A through B, but are not using any other content of B, then you don’t need to cite B at all. You should just read the original article (A) and cite it.
Bibliography. In any piece of written work in which you have cited references to published works, it is necessary to provide a bibliography, or list of references, at the end of your work. You should provide only one such list. For some reason, many people have acquired the curious belief that they should give two lists: one list of all the references in the order they occur, and a second.
